Trouble in Paradise? A fundamental weakness of the iPhone 17 Air and Galaxy S25 Slim has been discovered

Recently, a very pleasant trend has been growing, namely increasing the capacity of batteries. The previously traditional capacity of around 4500-5000 mAh is increasing, and phones with batteries over 6000 mAh are no exception, on the contrary, there are more and more of them. One category, however, will not be affected by this trend, and that is the expected thin flagships from Samsung and Apple.

Thin chassis will be in vogue

Apple and Samsung are launching a new category of phones, namely thin flagships. Compact devices do not pull at all, so both manufacturers will try to make it on a thin chassis. The first to arrive is the Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim with a chassis around 6.4 mm thin, and in the fall we will see the iPhone 17 Air, which should be even thinner and get a body whose thickness stops somewhere around 5.5 mm.

But such a thin chassis will mean several concessions, because there is not enough space and not all gadgets can be implemented in the structure. For example, the thin iPhone will not have a SIM card slot at all (it will only work on an eSIM) and the Galaxy S25 Slim will not get a periscopic telephoto lens, which will not fall on its thicker siblings. Well, then there will be batteries.

Slim construction in exchange for durability

When these thin phones started to be talked about, it was clear that the battery would definitely not reach the capacities of models with a thicker construction. Technologies have moved quite a bit in this direction, but obviously not in such a way that it is possible to fit a reasonably large battery into such a thin structure.

Information about the capacity of the batteries in these phones was brought by a well-known informant DCS and you won’t like it. According to him, the batteries in the Samsung Galaxy S25 Slim and the iPhone 17 Air will have a capacity somewhere between 3000 and 4000 mAh, which is really poor for today and nothing that would indicate any above-standard endurance.

Endurance sacrificed on the altar of fashion

It is certain that in terms of durability, these will not be phones that would break any records. We’ll probably be happy with a day’s worth of battery life, but on the other hand, the basic Samsung Galaxy S and iPhones are also between these values with battery capacity, and they all work without problems, so it shouldn’t be a major problem in the end.
