An Azerbaijan Airlines Embraer 190 was flying from Azerbaijan’s capital Baku to the Russian city of Grozny in the North Caucasus in late December when it diverted and crashed while attempting to land in Aktau, Kazakhstan, after flying east across the Caspian Sea.

38 people died in the accident and 29 survivors were injured.

After the incident, it was suggested that the plane may have been hit by a Russian missile.
