In the acceptance speech of his nomination as the candidate of the Republican Party for the White House, Donald Trump assured that he will be the leader of all Americans, not just those of his party, international press agencies inform.
Just five days after nearly losing his life, Trump, 78, returned to the stage and predicted an “unbelievable victory”.
Trump appeared in front of his supporters to cheers and applause and announced that he had come with a “message of confidence, strength and hope.”
“I’m running for president for all of America, not half of it, because there’s no winning when you only win half,” he declared.
After the elections on November 5, the Republicans will achieve “an incredible victory and begin the greatest four years in the history of the country”, declared Trump at the beginning of his speech.
A new era will begin “of security, prosperity and freedom for citizens of all races, religions, colors and creeds. (…) As Americans we are united by a unique and common destiny”, Trump said.
Reuters notes that Trump struck an unusually conciliatory tone in the first few minutes of his speech, but later returned to his usual attacks on the administration of Democratic President Joe Biden.
Trump described in detail the attack of which he was the target
“I heard a loud whooshing sound and I felt something hit me really, really hard in my right ear,” Trump said, a thick bandage still covering his ear. “I was like, ‘Wow, what was that? It can only be a bullet and my right hand filled with blood when I put it to my ear,” he continued.
“There was blood everywhere and yet somehow I felt safe because I had God by my side,” Trump told his supporters.
The crowd, Trump added, instead of running away, “bravely stood up to see where the sniper was” and started pointing at him.
“They didn’t move. The reason is that they knew I had a very serious problem and they saw me fall suddenly,” said Trump, who added that after Secret Service agents picked him up, he felt calm.
Trump also said that when he got up, he saw that the crowd was “confused because they thought he was dead” and felt “a lot of pain.”
“I saw them and I wanted to do something to let them know that I’m fine. I raised my right arm, I looked at the thousands and thousands of people (…) and I started shouting Fight, fight, fight!”, said Trump.
“The assassin’s bullet was a quarter of an inch away from taking my life. If I hadn’t moved my head, the killer’s bullet would have gone in perfectly and I wouldn’t be here tonight, we wouldn’t be together,” Trump said, as some spectators wept.
As Trump told supporters he “shouldn’t be here,” the crowd chanted, “But here you are!” As photos of his bloodied face flashed on screens behind him, Trump praised the Secret Service agents who rushed to protect him.
Donald Trump called for “opposition not to be criminalized or political dissent to be demonized” on Thursday, again denouncing legal proceedings against him, during his speech at the Republican convention in Milwaukee.
Trump also declared that the Democrats are “destroying our country”
“Under the current administration, we really are a nation in decline,” insisted the former Republican president.
Trump promises to complete the border wall with Mexico
“I will end the illegal immigration crisis by closing the border and finishing the wall,” the Republican candidate assured during his speech at the Republican convention in Milwaukee.
Trump referred to his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un
“I think he misses me,” he said, vowing that if he returned to the White House, nuclear-armed North Korea would stop launching missiles.
“Our adversaries inherited a world at peace and turned it into a planet at war, (…) Look at this attack on Israel. Look at what is happening in Ukraine”, he continued.
Trump’s entrance on the stage was worthy of a television star or professional wrestler: a screen slowly rose and Trump appeared standing in front of huge lights arranged to draw his last name, and then in an image of the White House was projected behind him.
Before Trump took the stage for his acceptance speech, Republican convention attendees were able to greet his wife, Melania Trump, who has rarely been seen on the campaign trail, Reuters notes.
She entered the room to classical music and waved to the crowd from a booth next to Senator JD Vance.
The conclusion drawn by Reuters is that with his control of the Republican Party firmer than ever, Trump will be in a much stronger position than in his 2017-2021 term to pursue his agenda if he wins the Nov. 5 presidential election.
