Trump and Zelenskyy have agreed to meet and discuss peace

The US Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, spoke on the phone with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, on Friday – and according to Trump, it was a “really good call”.

He states this on his social media, Truth Social.

During the conversation, Trump promised to stop the war between Russia and Ukraine, which has been going on since Russia began its invasion in February 2022.

If Trump wins the US presidential election on November 5, he will have already stopped the war before he officially takes office as president in January 2025, he claims.

“Both sides (Ukraine and Russia, ed.) will be able to meet each other and negotiate an agreement that puts an end to the violence and paves a way forward,” says Trump.

There are not many concrete political proposals that have yet come from Trump.

In an interview with Reuters last year, however, the Republican said that, according to him, Ukraine may have to cede some areas of the country to Russia if a peace agreement is to become a reality.

After the phone call, Zelenskyi says that he wished Trump congratulations on his nomination as the Republican Party’s presidential candidate – and the two have agreed to hold a physical meeting.

He writes this in a post on the social media X.

“Ukraine is grateful for the support of the United States, which strengthens our ability to resist Russian terror. Russian attacks against our cities and communities continue every day,” writes the president.

“We agreed with Trump that we must discuss in a personal meeting the steps that can be taken to create a peace that is just and lasting”.

During the phone call, the Ukrainian also touched on the assassination that was carried out a week ago against Trump during a campaign meeting.

Zelenskyj “condemned the shocking assassination” and wished Trump “strength and complete security in the future”.

The two also met in 2019.
