Wright is also slated to serve on the new National Energy Council, which Trump said will include all agencies involved in the “permitting, producing, generating, distributing, regulating and transporting” energy. North Dakota Gov. Doug Burgum, Trump’s nominee for Interior Secretary, will become chairman of the council.

“Chris is a leading energy technologist and entrepreneur. He has worked in the nuclear, solar, geothermal, and oil and gas sectors. Most importantly, Chris was one of the pioneers of the American shale revolution, which ensured American energy independence and changed the world’s energy markets and geopolitical situation,” Trump said on Saturday.

Wright is also a board member of a modular nuclear reactor company and has discussed the future of nuclear power. Nuclear energy development has become an important focus of the Department of Energy under the Joe Biden administration.

Harold Hamm, an Oklahoma billionaire who made his fortune in fracking and advised Trump on energy issues during the campaign, told Hart Energy that Wright was his top candidate for the job, calling him “a very, very smart man.”

Wright believes that burning fossil fuels causes climate change, but does not believe that the increase in extreme weather events is caused by it. He is also a strong supporter of fossil fuels, saying in interviews that they are necessary to lift developing countries out of poverty.

“The world runs on oil and gas, and we need it,” Wright told CNBC in 2023, adding that calls to phase out fossil fuels within a decade were an “absurd timeline.”

In 2021, the International Energy Agency said that to prevent the worst effects of global warming, it is necessary to stop approving new fossil fuel projects. However, many countries have since approved new projects, including the United States under President Joe Biden.

“Disrupting the current energy system before we’ve built a new one just doesn’t make sense,” Wright told CNBC. “I don’t think we’ll see much change in our hydrocarbon system in the next three decades.”
