With the US election fast approaching, new revelations about ex-president and candidate Donald Trump are raising questions about his future policy regarding the war in Ukraine, should he return to the White House.
The facts date back to 2017, during a meeting in Hamburg between Trumpelected seven months earlier, and Vladimir Putin. The geopolitical context was tense at the time: Russia had annexed Crimea three years earlier, the beginnings of the future war with Ukraine. In the presence of their advisors, the two men broached the subject of Ukraine.
According to The Independent and the New York TimesTrump then reportedly raised the possibility of supplying weapons to Ukraine and sought advice from Putin. “What do you think?”he would have said. A long speech from Putin would have followed, calling Ukraine a country “corrupt” et “made”to which Russia had all the rights. Trump reportedly did not dispute that position, sparking concerns among U.S. officials.
Former Secretary of State Rex Tillerson, who was present at the meeting, compared the exchange to “a masterful lesson” given by Putin to influence Trump’s still relatively new vision on Ukraine.
American election in sight
Some time later, the multiple cases showing Putin’s great influence on Trump’s decisions, then the pressure exerted by the latter to push Zelensky to investigate Joe Bidenpolitical rival, have finished discrediting the billionaire in his management of American foreign policy.
Today, however, the race for the White House, more than uncertain, could well see Donald Trump triumph again, which raises concerns among the allies of the United States, particularly with regard to the war in Ukraine.
On September 27, following a very delicate meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskythe former American president pledged to “solve” the war in Ukraine in just 24 hours if he is re-elected. His argument: he has very good relations with President Putin. Not sure this is enough.
