Violence is not the way to go. Give peace a chance
Hinckley wrote on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, prompting a flood of sarcastic responses, as reported by the British Independent.
Hinckley also recently uploaded a video in which he condemned violence and encouraged his followers for peace and love between people.
An assassin tried to shoot Donald Trump last Saturday, the former president was hit in the ear by a bullet at a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Hinckley, 69, was released from prison in 2022, 41 years after he attempted to assassinate Republican President Ronald Reagan outside the Washington Hilton Hotel on March 31, 1981. The shooting left Reagan seriously injured and press secretary James Brady permanently paralyzed. A member of the secret service and a policeman were also injured in the attack.
When Hinckley shot Reagan at age 25, he was suffering from acute psychosis. The assassination attempt was intended to impress actress Jodie Foster, whom he became obsessed with after seeing her in Taxi Driver. He was found not guilty by reason of mental illness and sent to a psychiatric facility. He began visiting his parents’ home in Williamsburg, Virginia in the 2000s, and was allowed to move in with his mother in 2016 after she was diagnosed with mental illness and in recovery. Under the terms of his release, Hinckley cannot drink alcohol, use drugs or possess weapons.
After his release from custody, he told CBS that he felt “guilty” about the assassination attempt on Reagan.
I just want you to know I’m sorry for what I did
he said earlier.
