Trump declares an economic emergency?

US President-elect Donald Trump could declare an economic emergency to impose tariffs on both allies and enemy countries, CNN reported, citing sources familiar with the situation.

Trump is reportedly considering using the International Emergency Economic Powers Act, since that law gives a number of powers related to the introduction of tariffs based on national security, without strict requirements for proving the need for such action.

The law unilaterally enables the US president to manage imports during a state of emergency.

Trump used the aforementioned law in his first term to threaten Mexico with high tariffs on all imports if the Mexican authorities refused to stop illegal migration to the US.
