Trump guarantees he will accept defeat if election is fair – Americas

Marcelo fears that Trump in the White House means “a bad relationship with Europe”

The President of the Republic said this Tuesday that he was concerned about the results of the presidential elections in the United States, stating that the election of Donald Trump could represent the imposition of more unfavorable economic measures for Europe.

“I’m worried for a very simple reason. (…) It’s that we already know the two candidates. One was president for four years, we know exactly what he thinks and the other was vice president for four years, we know exactly what she thinks. And they are very different, especially for us Europeans”, began by stating Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa.

For the head of state, the victory of the Republican candidate, former president Donald Trump, “means a bad relationship with Europe”, similar to what occurred during his presidency, considering that Europe, after China, is his main economic adversary and “therefore economic and financial measures must be taken that are unfavorable to Europe.”

“In the past it was a difficult relationship with Europe, probably if he is elected it will be a difficult relationship with Europe”, he concluded.

On the other hand, he continued, in the Democratic candidate, current vice-president Kamala Harris, “we find a position of greater collaboration between the United States and Europe. This makes a difference, especially at a time when Europe is not doing well economically ” , he said.

“If on top of this, there are American measures that are unfavorable to Europe, it is not the same to win one or win another. And therefore, for this very simple reason, it also reaches Portugal, because if a Germany, a France , an Italy to which we export a lot, if they remain in crisis or enter a situation more because of the relationship with the United States of America, the invoice will also reach Portugal.
