US President-elect Donald Trump spoke on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin, The Washington Post (WP) reported on Sunday, citing unnamed sources. According to WP, Trump urged the head of the Kremlin not to escalate the war in Ukraine, which is facing a Russian invasion from February 2022.

During the discussion on Ukraine, Trump also reportedly reminded Putin of the “significant military presence of the United States in Europe,” the US newspaper reported, citing Reuters.

During the election campaign, the Republican already claimed that he could end the war in Ukraine “within one day”, possibly even before taking office as president. So far, he has not explained how he would achieve this.

According to the media, Trump already spoke on the phone with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Wednesday after winning the US presidential election. Since then, according to his words, he has spoken with approximately 70 world leaders.

Billionaire Elon Musk is said to have joined the phone call with Zelensky. According to Axios, Trump told the Ukrainian leader that he would continue to support Kyiv, but did not go into details. This interview was allegedly reassuring for Zelensky.

The Kremlin reported on Friday that Putin is ready to discuss Ukraine with Trump, but that does not mean he is willing to change Russia’s demands to end the war, Reuters recalled.
