The American intelligence service has informed the Republican presidential candidate, Donald Trump, on Tuesday about possible Iranian plans to assassinate him.
This is what Trump’s campaign team says, according to the Reuters news agency.
– Earlier today, President Trump was briefed by employees of the intelligence service about real and specific threats from Iran to assassinate him in an attempt to destabilize and create chaos in the United States, the campaign writes in a statement.
Donald Trump was US president from 2017 to 2021. Although he is not contesting the office today, there is a tradition in the US of continuing to refer to ex-presidents with the title president.
According to the Trump camp, intelligence officials estimate that the threat from Iran must have “increased over the past few months”.
The campaign team also says that US officials are working to protect the former president and ensure that the November 5 election is not affected by the situation.
Iran has previously rejected allegations of meddling in US affairs.
In August, the US Department of Justice announced that a Pakistani man with alleged ties to Iran had been charged with involvement in a failed attempt to kill a US politician or government official.
According to the prosecutors, the 46-year-old Pakistani had tried to hire a so-called hit man in the United States to carry out a murder on an unnamed powerful American.
The killing was to take place in retaliation for the US killing of Iranian Major General Qassem Soleimani in 2020.
Earlier this month, the Pakistani man pleaded not guilty to the charges, writes Reuters.
It was the former president of the United States, Donald Trump, who authorized the deadly drone strike against Soleimani.
However, it is not known whether it was Trump who was to be the target of the alleged revenge killing.
For years, the United States has been concerned that Iran would retaliate against Trump after he, as president, ordered the killing of Qassem Soleimani in 2020.
