US President-elect Donald Trump has nominated his longtime ally Brooke Rollins for the post of Secretary of Agriculture. He made the announcement late Saturday afternoon. According to the media, this completed the selection of the new government cabinet, which will take power next January.
A lawyer, Rollins held the position of domestic policy adviser during Trump’s previous term as president in the White House. She is the head of the America First Policy Institute think tank, which was created in 2021 to promote the Trump agenda, writes The New York Times (NYT). It is staffed by a number of people who also held roles in the first Trump administration.
According to the NYT, Rollins was also being considered as White House chief of staff. But Susie Wiles, who managed Trump’s election campaign this year, eventually won the position.
If the 52-year-old Rollins is confirmed in office by the Senate, she will oversee an office with an annual budget of more than 200 billion dollars (4.8 trillion crowns), which has almost 100,000 employees and an extensive portfolio. The native of Glen Rose, Texas, will be responsible not only for the regulation or support of the agricultural sector, but also for most of the federal food aid programs or the management of national forests and rangelands.
