US President-elect Donald Trump refused today to rule out using force to annex the Panama Canal and Greenland, saying both areas are “very important to US economic security”.
“I can’t assure you of either,” he said when asked today if he could assure that he would not use military or economic coercion in his bid to bring Greenland and the Panama Canal under his control. “I cannot assure you, you are talking about Panama and Greenland. No, I can’t assure you of either. But I can tell you this, we need them for financial security.”

At the same time, during his speech after winning the 2024 elections, he promised to stop wars, saying: “I’m not going to start a war, I’m going to stop wars.” However, he said he wants to rename the Gulf of Mexico “Gulf of America”.

“We’re going to change the name of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America, which has a nice ring to it. That covers a lot of ground, the Gulf of America — what a beautiful name. And it’s appropriate,” Trump told reporters.
Donald Trump Jr. in Greenland
Donald Trump Jr. arrived in Greenland on the same day his father did not rule out using the US military to gain US control of the region.
Before arriving in the capital Nuuk, Trump Jr. said he was going on a “personal day trip” to talk to people and had no scheduled meetings with government officials.

US President-elect Donald Trump as early as last month said that “ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity” for US national security.
“We are not for sale,” said the island’s prime minister at the time. “Greenland belongs to the people of Greenland.” He also told Greenlanders to take their next step towards independence.
After his son’s arrival in Nuuk, President-elect Trump wrote on his Truth Social platform that “the reception has been great.” Another post included a selection of images showing Trump Jr. standing next to people wearing red Make America Great Again hats.

Trump wrote that Greenland “and the Free World, need safety, security, strength and peace!”
“Make Greenland great again!” he added.

Another of his father’s social media posts included a video of an unnamed Greenlander telling Trump to buy Greenland and rid it of Danish “colonization.”
The identity of the man in the video was unclear, but Danish media reported that he had been jailed six years ago for drug offences.
Greenland lies on the shortest route from North America to Europe, making it strategically important to the US. It is also home to a major US space facility.
Canada is also in the spotlight
At the same time, Donald Trump threatened today to use the “economic power” of the USA against Canada, after yesterday he declared that it is in the interest of this ally of Washington to become the “51st State” of the country.
“No, economic strength,” the president-elect said when asked if he was considering using the armed forces to annex Canada, commenting that the neighboring country is “subsidized” by the US for its protection.
Many people in Canada LOVE being the 51st State. The United States can no longer suffer the massive Trade Deficits and Subsidies that Canada needs to stay afloat. Justin Trudeau knew this, and resigned. If Canada merged with the U.S., there would be no Tariffs, taxes would go way…

On Monday, in a post on his Truth Social website, Trump wrote that it would be in Canada’s best interest to become the “51st State” of the US.
“If Canada were to merge with the US, there would be no customs duties, taxes would be greatly reduced, and Canada would be completely safe from the threat of Russian and Chinese ships that constantly surround it. Together, what a great nation we would be!” he said in this post, the same day Congress certified his victory in November’s presidential election.
