US President-elect Donald Trump said on Tuesday that he will meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin “very soon” after he takes office next week.
He gave no timetable for the meeting, which would be the first between the leaders of the two countries since Russia’s war with Ukraine began in February 2022.
Asked about his strategy for ending the war, Trump vowed: “Well, there’s only one strategy, and it depends on Putin. I can’t imagine he’s too thrilled with the way it all went because it didn’t go too well for him either.”
A conversation between Putin and Trump is expected
– I know that he wants to meet, and I will meet with him very soon. I would have done it earlier, but… I have to go into the office first. For some things you have to be there – said Trump.
US Congressman Mike Waltz, the future national security adviser, said on Sunday that he expects a conversation between Trump and Putin in the “coming days and weeks”.
Russia’s invasion of Ukraine left tens of thousands dead, displaced millions and caused the biggest crisis in relations between Moscow and the West since the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis.
