Trump rejects Kamala Harris’ challenge to a second debate on CNN because states are already voting

US Vice President Kamala Harris on Saturday challenged her rival in the November election, former President Donald Trump, to a new debate on October 23, but the Republican rejected the proposal, arguing that it was already “too late” since early voting had already begun in some states.

In a statement, Harris’ campaign manager Jen O’Malley Dillon announced that the vice president had accepted Harris’ invitation. CNN for a debate against Trump in Atlanta, the network’s headquarters located in the strategic state of Georgia.

O’Malley Dillon has argued that the debates have provided “a unique opportunity for voters to compare the candidates and assess their competing visions for America.” He has also considered that it would have been “unprecedented in modern history” that there would have been only one debate before the elections that will determine the next occupant of the White House.

Harris y Trump They had already faced each other on September 10 in Philadelphia, in the key state of Pennsylvania, in a match organized by the network ABC where the vice president emerged victorious, causing her opponent to lose his temper on repeated occasions.

Previously, Trump had debated in late June with then-Democratic candidate President Joe Biden, who, after a weak performance in that debate organized by CNN and after having received internal pressure from his party, he has had to abandon the campaign, handing over the baton to Harris.

The debate that Harris has accepted this Saturday would take place in CNN under the same rules as the meeting in which Trump had declared himself the winner over Biden, so the Democratic campaign has estimated that the Republican should have had “no problem” in accepting the new invitation.

Shortly after that O’Malley Dillon announced that the campaign had agreed to the debate, Harris herself wrote on X: “I have gladly agreed to a second presidential debate on October 23. I look forward to @realDonaldTrump join me,” mentioning the former president’s account.

Trump, for his part, quickly rejected the proposal during a rally in Wilmington, in the key state of North Carolina.

“She’s had one debate, I’ve had two. It’s been too late for another one, I’d love to in many ways, but it’s been too late, the votes have already been cast, the voters have been out there. Have you all been voting, please? Go out and vote,” the former president said, addressing the audience.

Early voting for the November 5 presidential election began in three states on Friday: Minnesota, Dakota del Sur y Virginia. In the coming weeks, other states will also allow early voting at the polls or by mail.

Currently, polls have predicted a close race between Harris y Trumpby a few points. Due to the American electoral system, everything will depend on the results in seven key states: Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Georgia, North Carolina, Arizona and Nevada.
