US President-elect Donald Trump is preparing to nominate Jamieson Greer, a lawyer specializing in international trade, as Trade Representative, according to sources cited by Bloomberg.
Greer was chief of staff to Robert Lighthizer, who held the position of Trade Representative in Trump’s first term and was responsible for imposing tariffs worth billions on US allies and adversaries.
Greer’s choice highlights the role that tariffs will play in Trump’s economic policy, who recently announced the imposition of additional duties of 10% on all products from China and 25% on goods imported from Canada and Mexico.
Trump’s trade policy also aims to raise tax revenue and pressure companies to return to producing in the US, but could result in a wide-ranging trade war with the Americans’ main trading partners, analysts say.
Greer, who will work under the tutelage of the already appointed Secretary of Commerce – multimillionaire Howard Lutnick, until now CEO of the financial services company Cantor Fitgerald -, should play an essential role in defining, negotiating and implementing trade tariffs in the Trump administration.
