Try Apple Intelligence for yourself now in the first open betas for iOS, iPad and Mac

Apple Intelligence is in the first update for iOS and iPadOS 18 and for macOS Sequoia. And the first public beta is now available to try. On the Mac you experience Apple Intelligence without any hassle, on iPhone and iPad you have to take a small detour.

Officially, Apple Intelligence is not coming to Europe on the iPhone for the time being, but it will work on the Mac. The Mac does not have a market share as large as iOS, so Apple dares to take the step without a potential fine from Europe. For those who can’t wait, there is now the first open beta of macOS Sequoia, version 15.1.

In that public beta there is just Apple Intelligence, but only in English. But as long as you have the language of your Mac with at least M1 chip set to US English, you can use Apple Intelligence. But you can also try Apple Intelligence in the betas on iPhone and iPad: there too you have to choose US English as the language, and you have to be logged in to the App Store with an American Apple ID. You also have to run a VPN, so that you can change your internet location to the US. Reboot once and presto: Apple Intelligence also works on the iPhone and iPad.

Trick works, for now

The detour is not ideal, but for those who are very curious, you can now try out Apple Intelligence. You also have to be on a waiting list to use Apple Intelligence, so it is not certain that you can get started right away. Moreover, it is possible that this ‘trick’ only works while this update is in beta, and Apple will soon take more measures to make it more difficult to use Apple Intelligence in the EU.

Apple is not certain that Apple Intelligence complies with EU DMA legislation. After all, Apple’s AI only works on Apple devices, unlike OpenAI ChatGPT and Google Gemini, for example, which work on a variety of devices. Does Apple have an unfair competitive advantage by releasing Apple Intelligence in this way?

New languages coming

That will have to be fought out in the coming months, but fortunately Apple is preparing for an expansion to Europe. French and Spanish will be the next western languages, followed by German and Italian from next year. You would think: Apple is probably not only doing all that effort for the Mac user, but also for iPhones and iPads.
