Try Minecraft on LSD. Oasis is an AI model that creates Minecraft in real time

Perhaps somewhere on the Internet, often for example on social networks such as Instagram or TikTok, you came across a very special version of Minecraft that looked like a nightmare. It wasn’t a wannabe joke, but a playable version of the popular game, which was generated in real time by artificial intelligence.

The entire project is in charge of the company Decart, originally a research laboratory that focuses on the effective training of artificial intelligence. She has several million dollars in investments behind her, and in addition to her research, she created the Oasis model. Thanks to millions of hours of watching Minecraft, the model has knowledge of what Minecraft looks like – Decart then implemented frame-generation into this “experience” so that the AI could generate entire images from its knowledge.

The result is an interactive environment that you can try out through yours browser. After standing in line, you can go to one of the Minecraft worlds and play comfortably. After a few seconds, however, you will find that due to the zero game logic behind the entire operation, the artificial intelligence will quickly start to hallucinate. Chickens become bushes, as soon as you look at the ground, the whole world changes completely around you, and a flat plain can become a rocky terrain.

Artificial intelligence simply reacts to what it sees in front of it and tries to figure out game logic based on what it remembers. Even considering the low quality of individual images, the AI has enough room for great creativity. Interestingly, the game takes into account, for example, the player’s inventory, throwing items, or the difference between walking and running.

Decart has not yet revealed whether he has bigger plans for Oasis or whether it is primarily a marketing stunt, but he has certainly seen success. It is possible that after some time it will get into a legal battle with Microsoft, which owns Minecraft – the whole project is in a gray zone, where although the game is derived from Minecraft, in theory it is a unique product created by AI based on the knowledge that are freely accessible.
