TSMC can do no wrong

The world’s largest contract chip manufacturer, Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company, or TSMC, reported another brilliant quarter on Wednesday. While the company’s competitors, such as Intel and Samsung, are suffering, the Taiwanese once again exceeded all preliminary expectations.

Based on the quarterly report, TSMC’s net profit increased by 54% to 325.3 billion Taiwan dollars (converted to about 10.1 billion US dollars) in the period from the beginning of July to the end of September. Analysts had previously expected a significantly lower profit of 300.2 billion Taiwan dollars from the company, which has now repeatedly defied expectations.

The increase in profit was accompanied by a significant – 36% – increase in revenue, the company generated sales revenue equivalent to 23.5 billion US dollars in the third quarter, and the gross margin also increased in parallel, from 54.3% to 57.8%.

TSMC’s strong performance in the third quarter was not surprisingly primarily due to sales and profit from the production of data center AI chips, the management also highlighted that the production volume of system processors intended for smartphones also increased during the period – these chips are now typically produced by TSMC 3 and is made with 5 nm production technology.

The Taiwanese company is one, but not the biggest, beneficiary of the AI boom. The price of the company’s shares listed in Taipei rose by 80% this year, but success comes at a serious price: TSMC is making investments worth 30 billion US dollars this year alone, and building an international presence also comes at a huge cost. A good example of this is that the company is building a new wood plant worth 65 billion dollars in Arizona, from which local market players will be able to be supplied.
