TSMC: the Americans should only be partners, not companions

TSMC, as the world’s number one chip manufacturer, also benefits enormously from the peak AI hype, which promises better-than-expected annual financial results for the Asian company. Meanwhile, the atmosphere around the company is also influenced by current political events such as the ongoing US presidential election campaign.

In an interview with Bloomberg on Wednesday, former president Donald Trump, who is running for the presidency, said, among other things, that Taiwan did not give anything to the USA, on the contrary, it took away 100% of chip production from the country, so it should actually pay defense money for to be protected by the United States in the event of a possible Chinese aggression.

A day after Trump’s interview, TSMC announced that its net profit for the period from April to the end of June rose to NT$247.8 billion (about US$7.6 billion), beating the consensus estimate of NT$238.8 billion. That equates to a 36.6% increase on net sales of $20.82 billion (a little over 40% increase).

During the conference call following the presentation of the quarterly results, the company’s president, CC Wei, emphasized that artificial intelligence is clearly the main catalyst for semiconductor production today, and TSMC’s production lines are fully utilizing smartphone system chips with AI capabilities and supercomputer solutions such as Nvidia AI. -accelerators.

According to the above, the company’s largest customers include, among others, Apple, Qualcomm, AMD and Nvidia.

Wei responded only tangentially to Trump’s comment when asked if his company would be willing to form a joint venture with an American partner. TSMC’s president answered the question with a firm no, adding that the American factory construction strategy will continue as planned.

TSMC is currently building 3 new factories in the state of Arizona, the investment cost of which is about 65 billion dollars. The company receives $11.6 billion in government support for American investments from the CHIPS Act grant fund.
