Tupac Shakur: Las Vegas police charge man in 1996 shooting death of rapper

The hip-hop star, considered one of the most influential rappers of all time, was shot dead in Nevada in September 1996. But his shooter has not yet been identified, and the case has frustrated investigators and fascinated the public ever since. ANDinforms CNN.

American investigators are now closer to solving the murder of legendary rapper Tupac Shakur. He was shot by a killer 27 years ago when the rapper’s car stopped at an intersection. Six days later, Tupac died in the hospital. The identity of the killer was never discovered.

Detectives on Friday in Las Vegas arrested and charged Duane Keith Davis, who was known in the 1990s as a gangster with the nickname Keefe D. His wife’s house was searched by the police in July this year. Now, a grand jury in Nevada has indicted Duane “Keffe D” Davis, now 60, for murder with a deadly weapon.

Police say he planned the fatal shooting after his nephew got into a fight with Shakur at a casino. Davis, who was arrested on Friday, will appear in court in a few days, she stated BBC.

Former Los Angeles police detective Greg Kading, who spent years investigating Shakur’s murder, told The Associated Press that he was not surprised by Mr. Davis’ arrest. “All the other direct conspirators or participants are dead,” Kading said, calling Davis the “last man standing” in the case.

Prosecutor Marc DiaGiacomo described Davis in court as the former leader of the South Side Compton Crips street gang, the “commander on the ground” who “ordered the death” of Shakur.

At a news conference later Friday, Officer Jason Johansson said the unit’s persistence in the investigation “finally paid off” and explained what led to the breakthrough. He said Orlando Anderson, the suspect’s late nephew, and Shakur were involved in a fight at the casino shortly before the rapper was shot and killed on Sept. 7, 1996. He dies in hospital a few days later.

Johansson showed reporters footage from a hotel security camera of Anderson being beaten. He said that ultimately led to the retaliatory shooting of Shakur as he waited in his car at a red light.

A police officer said the gang connection quickly became apparent and was reviewed several times. However, in 2018, new information came that “revived” the case.

Johansson also referred to Davis’ “own admission” to the media when he acknowledged he was in the vehicle from which the shooting took place.

At the same news conference, where he was visibly emotional, Sheriff Kevin McMahill said that “Tupac Shakur’s family has been waiting for justice for 27 years.” He further added, “Many people questioned the importance of solving Tupac Shakur’s murder to our police department. I want to tell you that it was important. Our goal at LVMPD has always been to bring those responsible for the violent death of Tupac to justice.”

Rapper Shakur, better known by his stage name 2Pac, released his debut album in 1991. His death, which befell one of the most recognized names in hip-hop, inspired several documentaries.

During his career, he sold more than 75 million albums worldwide and scored chart successes with hits including “California Love,” “All Eyez On Me” and “Changes.” He also made a name for himself as an actor in films such as “Juice,” “Poetic Justice,” “Above The Rim,” “Gridlock’d” and “Gang Related.”

In June of this year, the rapper was posthumously awarded a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
