tvOS 18.2 brings support for 21:9 aspect ratios and other aspect ratios to Apple TV

The update tvOS 18.2currently in the beta phase for developers, introduces an interesting innovation for Apple TV users: the support to different formats, including 21:9designed for users projectors or cinema screens. Previewed during WWDC in June, tvOS 18 promised new features that are finally arriving for everyone, starting with support for specific aspect ratios for those who want to make the most of their home theater setup.

The update allows users to choose from a range of aspect ratios to better match Apple TV to different screens and projectors. In addition to 21:9, a widespread format in cinema, options are now available such as:

  • Automatic
  • 16:9 (standard format for modern TVs)
  • 21:9
  • 2.37:1, 2.39:1, and 2.40:1 (widescreen formats)
  • DCI 4K (used in cinema projections)
  • 32:9 (ultra-wide screens)

The ability to select larger or particular formats is especially designed for those who connect the Apple TV to projectors, which often require a specific format for optimal viewing. Thanks to tvOS 18.2, anyone who owns an ultra-wide or cinema screen you will now be able to take advantage of Apple TV without finding yourself with black borders or distorted images.

tvOS 18 is not limited to news on supported formats. One of the most popular features is InSight, which allows you to view detailed information about actors, characters and soundtracks while watching content on Apple TV+. Quickly, you can learn details about a specific scene or discover the name of a piece of music or the actor on the screen with a simple tap.

Furthermore, the update improves the Enhance Dialogue function, making dialogue even clearer and more audible. Another interesting new feature is the automatic activation of subtitles when you press the Mute button, particularly useful for not missing any dialogue when watching in noisy environments.

tvOS 18 also introduces a redesigned version of the Fitness+ app, with new workout modes for users, and the ability to use an iPhone as a dedicated camera for FaceTime and other apps, making Apple TV a focal point for video calls as well.

The tvOS 18.2 update will be released publicly in December and will be compatible with Apple TV starting from 2015 models. Although some new features such as the new Apple TV+ screensavers are not yet available in the beta, developers can already test these features in preview .
