Streaming platform Twitch has reinstated the account of former US President Donald Trump, who was banned indefinitely from the platform following the storming of the US Capitol in 2021.
“We have reinstated former President Trump’s Twitch channel,” a company spokesperson told multiple media outlets, including The Verge. “We believe it is valuable to hear directly from presidential nominees when possible. Trump is now the official Republican nominee for president of the United States.”
If Trump violates Twitch’s terms of service again, the company could still ban his account. “We will continue to enforce our Community Guidelines and take appropriate action when we identify violations of our rules,” Twitch said.
Banned several times
Trump has been banned from the platform several times. In 2020, the then-president was suspended for the first time, at that time for two weeks. Twitch took this measure because Trump rebroadcast his 2015 speech, in which he claimed that Mexico was sending criminals and rapists to the US.
The ex-president’s account was then suspended again on January 6, 2021. This happened after the storming of the US Capitol by Trump supporters. Two weeks later, Twitch extended the ban indefinitely.
Earlier this month, Meta decided that Trump can be active on Instagram and Facebook again. The ex-president was also no longer welcome on those platforms after January 6, 2021. On X, another platform that Trump banned after the storming, Trump has been allowed to post again since November 2022. Since his X account has been active again, the ex-president has only a post placed.
