Images of two burnt Ryzen 9800X3D processors appeared on reddit and the Quasarrzone forum. In both cases, they were installed on the MSI MAG X870 Tomahawk board, but the cause is still unknown.
Both users who shared the picture had practically the same problem, namely burnt contacts between the processor and the socket. Although the original users claimed to be experienced in building computers, comments piled up under the photos pointing to the most likely wrong orientation in the processor’s placement. This then resulted in insufficient contact between the pins and a subsequent short circuit.
But Tom’s Hardware points to a slightly damaged plastic enclosure, which could have been caused by the user, but also a manufacturing error. MSI has officially confirmed that it is now investigating the matter. But for now, it doesn’t look like it’s the same problem as the Ryzen 7000 releases, which were burning out en masse due to faulty voltages.
