Two cubs of the lowland nyala antelope were born in the Pilsen zoo. In mid-October and subsequently in mid-November, the existing six-member nyal herd grew by a male and a female. Just as a few days ago the turtles surprised with a repeated clutch after a month, so there is a similar coincidence with the antelopes, zoo spokesman Martin Vobruba told ČTK today. According to him, it was the 49th and 50th cubs born in the Pilsen garden.
“Two nyal cubs were born a month after each other – a male on October 16 and a female on November 16. Both were born to mothers born in the Pilsen Zoo – Rwanda and Rihanna. The father is a young male Snoopy from the Safari Park in Dvór Králové,” she said ungulate curator Miroslava Palacká.
According to her, the Nyals spend the winter in a warm barn, but thanks to the glass windows, visitors can see them even when they are not in the outdoor enclosure. The herd can be seen through the window in the pavilion of African ungulates next to cranes and marabou.
“Nyaly has been bred by the Pilsen Zoo since 2008. The first two cubs were born in 2011,” said the spokesperson. After the birth of two cubs, there are now eight nyals in Pilsen – two males and six females.
Nyala is an African species of antelope distributed mainly in southern Africa – Malawi, Mozambique, Zimbabwe and Swaziland. Over 32,000 individuals live in the wild, 80 percent in protected areas. Numbers have stagnated in recent years.
