Driving against the flow and stopping past road markings at a red light often leads to traffic jams and even causes accidents.
Throughout 2024, there have been many viral posts on social media due to motorbike riders going against the flow. There are quite a few accidents and conflicts between road users due to behavior that violates traffic regulations.
Seeing this, the Safety Riding Promotion of PT Wahana Makmur Sejati (WMS) emphasizes that every motorbike rider must always be orderly in traffic.
One way is not to go against the direction because this behavior has a huge impact on traffic conditions on the road.
“Even if it’s just going against the flow a little, it’s already detrimental to other people because automatically 1 lane is used by drivers going against the flow,” said PT WMS Head of Safety Riding Promotion, Agus Sani.
Behavior against the flow will disrupt the existing traffic flow, potentially worsening traffic jams and increasing the risk of accidents due to minimal visibility.
According to Agus, if an accident occurs, people who go against the flow will be subject to multiple articles and will certainly suffer significant financial losses.
“Moreover, conditions on the highway are always changing, making this counter-current behavior very dangerous for other road users,” said Agus further.
Apart from going against the direction, the habit of stopping past road markings when at a red light will also harm other people. Markings that should be a driving guide are still often ignored or not paid attention to by road users.
Even at red lights, quite a few pedestrians have difficulty crossing the zebra crossing because there are still many vehicles that stop past the road markings.
One of the triggering factors for this behavior is rushing or being impatient, which can cause long traffic jams that are detrimental to other drivers.
The behavior of stopping after markings or at a zebra crossing is also sometimes a mode for drivers, who deliberately break the markings to slowly move forward and when there is an opportunity they will run through a red light.
Agus added, if just one driver stops after the road markings or in the zebra crossing area at a red light, it is certain that the others will follow him.
“This will actually make road conditions worse because more motorists will follow and endanger road users from the opposite direction,” he said.
PT WMS, through its Safety Riding Promotion, urges drivers to remain patient, alert, respect other road users and obey traffic regulations in any conditions.
This creates safer, smoother traffic, without incidents, and road users who feel disadvantaged due to drivers’ behavior or habits of violating traffic rules.
By prioritizing driving safety and orderly traffic, it has made a real contribution to reducing the number of accidents, and has not become the cause of traffic jams and accidents on the road. (dpid/TH)
