Two police officers jailed in Tenerife for charging false fines to foreign tourists

Two local police officers from a municipality in Tenerife have been imprisoned by court order, accused of a crime of misappropriation of public funds, after being arrested for allegedly keeping the money from fines imposed on foreign tourists that were not processed.

In the records carried out within the framework of the so-called ‘Operation Martyr’ were intervened “several tens of thousands” of euros, “hundreds” of reports of complaints imposed on foreign citizens that had not been processed, as well as other effects related to the crimes investigated, according to sources from the Civil Guard.

The investigation began more than four months ago, when the armed institute became aware of alleged irregularities in the performance of these members of the Local Police, who, according to the newspaper El Día, one of them is the head of this body in Buenavista from the North.

Once all the evidence had been gathered, the Civil Guard arrested the two police officers and carried out several searches in which they obtained “numerous and important documentation” certifying that the alleged criminal activity dates back “many years.”

The investigation was carried out by the Organic Unit of Judicial Police (UOPJ) of the Santa Cruz de Tenerife Command, which had the collaboration of the Traffic Accident Investigation Group (GIAT) of the Canary Islands Traffic Sector.
