Two-thirds of e-commerce sector employees are self-employed

The majority of employees in the e-commerce sector are self-employed. Only 48,000 are registered as ’employees’. At the end of last year, there were 24,585 vacancies in the sector, mainly for marketing positions.

This is evident in a labor market survey that Panteia carried out on behalf of Thuiswinkel.org.

Higher technical and specialist advisory functions are being outsourced, many to self-employed persons:

In this study, 86 different functions were identified, divided into seven functional areas.

More than half of employees work in e-supply operations functions.

The top five most common functions at the companies surveyed are: delivery person/courier (most common), truck driver, general e-ICT management functions, customer service employee and sorter

The average percentage of migrant workers at e-commerce companies is between one and five percent.

At the end of October 2023, there were 24,585 vacancies, of which 44 percent were for marketing positions and 16 percent were for e-commerce professionals.

Most vacancies are located in: North Holland (5,570), North Brabant (4,066) and then South Holland (4,019), followed by Utrecht and Gelderland.

In the first six months, Dutch consumers bought 17.5 billion euros worth of products and services from online stores and marketplaces, an increase of three percent compared to the previous year.
