Two youths arrested for insulting national flag in Kotwali

Kotwali police station arrested Rajesh Chowdhury (18) and Hriday Dash (25) on charges of insulting the country’s national flag by hoisting an ocher flag with Hinduism’s “Ami Sanatani” written on the Independence Pillar at New Market intersection in Chittagong city.

Arrested Rajesh Chowdhury son of deceased Shyamal Chowdhury of Alkaran Dobash Kolinor (Gali No. 4) under Kotwali police station of Nagar and Hriday Das son of Amal Das of the same area.

It is known that on Friday (October 25) the Sanatan community held a huge rally at Laldighi Maidan in Chittagong for their 8-point demand. A long march towards Dhaka was also announced to collect the demands from that rally.

At the end of the rally, the ocher flag with the inscription “Ami Sanatani” of Hinduism was hoisted over the national flag at the top of the Independence Pillar at Chittagong New Market intersection. Later, the procession passed through City College Road and circumambulated various roads.

Later, the issue of ocher flag in New Market area went viral on social media. There are various discussions and criticisms. Many people also commented that it has violated Article 3 of National Flag Act 1972 and Article 20 of 2010. Many also commented that hoisting another flag over the national flag to protect the honor of the freedom gained at the cost of blood is a punishable offence.

In this regard, Kotwali Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Muhammad Fazlul Quader Chowdhury said, ‘Two people have been arrested for insulting the national flag. Legal action is being taken against them.’
