UAE GET FIRST NUCLEAR POWER PLANT

The United Arab Emirates, an oil-rich nation, has completed the first nuclear power plant in the Arab world, in what has been described as a major step.

When fully operational, the Barakah nuclear power plant in Abu Dhabi will meet a quarter of the country’s electricity needs.

When its fourth and final reactor begins commercial operation, the nuclear power plant will produce 40 terawatt hours of electricity per year. This is almost as much as the annual consumption of New Zealand, wrote the French news agency AFP in a statement by the state-owned company ENEC, responsible for nuclear energy.

The first of the four reactors started operating in 2020.

The President of the United Arab Emirates, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan, called the completion of the power plant an important step on the way to zero greenhouse gas emissions.

Although the country uses gas stations to cover most of its electricity needs, it also has one of the world’s largest solar power plants in the suburbs of Abu Dhabi.
