(Uiryeong = Newsis) Reporter Kim Ki-jin = In Uiryeong-gun, Gyeongsangnam-do, a ‘town of figures’ filled with historical figures such as General Mangudang Kwak Jae-woo, famous as the leader of the righteous army, and Baeksan Ahn Hee-je, an academic presentation to look at new historical figures from Uiryeong was recently held at the Uiryeong-gun Cultural Center. Done.
According to Uiryeong-gun on the 18th, this academic presentation held under the theme of ‘Uiryeong’s people and scholarship’ was held to examine the literary world of scholars from Uiryeong who worried for the country and people in the face of invasion by great powers and national crisis in the late 19th century. It has been prepared.
The Uiryeong Cultural Center and Uiryeong-gun promoted the event to discuss the establishment of local community identity and development direction through academics.
At the academic presentation, there was an interesting academic commentary that the ‘Renaissance of Joseon Confucianism’ started in Uiryeong.
The reason is that the two representative Confucian scholars of Joseon, Toegye Lee Hwang and Nammyeong Jo Sik, promoted academic ideas in Uiryeong based on their ties with Uiryeong.
People from Uiryeong who were newly highlighted at this conference, such as Hulwa Lee Geun-ok, Chisa An Chan, Nisan Nam Jeong-chan, and Shingodang Kim Geuk-yeong, also inherited the Toegye School and the Nammyeong School, respectively, and made Joseon Confucianism and literature flourish.
Dr. Geumja Choi of the Department of Chinese Literature at Pusan National University, Dr. Hyunjin Kim of the Humanities Academy of Suncheon National University, and Dr. Dongwook Kang of the Gyeongnam Cultural Research Institute of Gyeongsang National University gave presentations on the topic and called them ‘hidden figures’ who preached the path forward for the country and its people through Confucianism and literature amidst foreign invasion and political chaos. He said that historical rediscovery is urgent.
In particular, praise was poured out for the literary achievements of Chisa An Chan (安鑽), including his poetry and prose.
Ahn Chan was mentioned for the first time in this academic debate as a hitherto unknown figure from the Tamjinan Clan Heonnapgong School in Ipsan-ri, Burim-myeon, which produced prominent figures such as Ahn Ki-jong, Ahn Hyo-je, Ahn Hee-je, Ahn Chang-je, Ahn Jun-sang, and Ahn Ho-sang.
Yang Seung-mok, a professor of Chinese literature at Gyeongsang National University, said, “Ahn Chan basically has the identity of a practical scholar, but his literary ability and orientation are also clear,” and added, “Academic discussions about his collection of works, ‘Episodes of Poetry,’ should continue. “In particular, ‘The Theory of the Shengun’ from the collection of poems is evaluated as a work that deserves to be included in the genealogy of the novels of the Cheongun,” he said.
Dr. Park Tae-seong of the Department of Korean Literature at Changwon National University said, “Ahn Chan’s poetry has many masterpieces that are in no way inferior to Choi Chi-won, who has excellent writing quality and excellent verses.” He added, “If you study Ahn Chan’s academic style, academic background, poetry, and sentences in depth, you will see that Ahn Chan, a writer from Uiryeong, is a new figure in the history of Korean literature. “It will occupy one place,” he said.
County Governor Oh Tae-wan said, “The deep concerns you had for the country 150 years ago are also in line with our concerns today as we seek to create a ‘better place to live in.’” He added, “I appreciate the power of culture and scholarship that our Uiryeong has.” “It was a valuable opportunity, and I will organize and publicize the achievements of the people,” he said.
