Ukraine intends to keep the Russian territory it conquered indefinitely
Ukraine intends to hold indefinitely the Russian territory captured in the surprise invasion of the Kursk border region last month, Volodymyr Zelensky told NBC News.
The Ukrainian president said in an exclusive interview that holding the territory is an integral part of his “victory plan” to force Vladimir Putin to come to the negotiating table and end the war.
He said he would present the proposal to international partners, including the US.
Then appearing to confirm that Ukrainian troops would eventually withdraw, Zelenskiy said Ukraine did not “need their territory”.
“We don’t want to bring our Ukrainian way of life there,” he said.
The president declined to say whether Ukraine plans to try to seize more Russian territory.
“With all due respect, I can’t talk about it, I think the success is very close to a surprise,” he said.
Ukrainian forces crossed the border into Kursk on August 6 in a shock attack that captured a number of villages and took hundreds of prisoners. Moscow vowed to retaliate.
