The Ministry of Energy of Ukraine has officially announced that the transit of Russian gas to the EU, as planned, has been stopped.
“We stopped the transit of Russian gas, this is a historical event. Russia is losing markets, it will suffer financial losses,” the press service of the ministry quotes Minister German Galushchenko. — Europe has already decided to abandon Russian gas. And the European initiative Repower EU envisages exactly what Ukraine has done today.”
The transit of Russian gas through the territory of Ukraine was carried out under pre-war agreements concluded at the end of 2019. Ukraine refused to renew them.
Despite the dissatisfaction of some European countries, in particular Hungary and Slovakia, the European Union plans to abandon all Russian fossil resources by 2027. Despite possible obstacles in Brussels’s way, Europe’s biggest gas consumers have changed course because of the war. Germany replaced Russian pipeline gas with Norwegian gas, Italy with Algerian gas.
Terminals for liquefied natural gas (LNG) are appearing on the European coast, accepting supplies from the United States, Qatar and other countries. Although Russian LNG volumes are increasing, in absolute terms they remain relatively small.
