The USA, India, Japan and Australia issued a joint statement calling for peace in Ukraine
The leaders of the United States, India, Japan and Australia called for a “comprehensive, just and lasting peace” in Ukraine in a joint statement following the September 21 QUAD leaders’ summit.
The QUAD countries – USA, India, Japan and Australia – form a strategic alliance dedicated to common economic and security interests in the Indo-Pacific region. The September 21 meeting marks the fourth annual summit of the group’s leaders.
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Japanese Prime Minister Kishida Fumio and US President Joe Biden met in Wilmington, Delaware to discuss their current cooperation.
Their joint statement included a call for peace in Ukraine.
“We reiterate the need for a global, just and lasting peace, in accordance with international law, in accordance with the goals and principles of the UN Charter, including respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity,” the statement reads.
“We also note the negative impact of the war in Ukraine in terms of global food and energy security.”
The statement also stated that the use or threat of nuclear weapons is “unacceptable” in the context of war.
The declaration did not explicitly condemn the Russian Federation for its large-scale invasion, reiterating instead that “all states must refrain from the threat or use of force against the territorial integrity and sovereignty or political independence of any state.”
Zelenskiy will visit an American factory that produces 155 mm shells
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will visit a 155 mm shell factory in Scranton, Pennsylvania on Sunday and thank workers who have increased production of 155 mm projectiles over the past year.
The Scranton plant is one of the few in the United States that produces 155 mm artillery shells.
Ukraine has already received over 3 million 155mm shells from the US.
Zelenski is also expected to be accompanied to the plant by two Pentagon executives who helped boost production – Douglas Bush, the US undersecretary of defense for acquisition, logistics and technology, and Bill LaPlante, the Pentagon’s top arms buyer – as and by the governor of Pennsylvania, Josh Shapiro.
Zelenski went to the US to speak at the annual meeting of the UN General Assembly in New York and will travel to Washington on Thursday to talk with US President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.
The Russians hit a block of flats in Kharkiv
Russian forces attacked an apartment block in Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, on Saturday, injuring 21 people, according to Governor Oleh Syniehubov.
Among the wounded are an 8-year-old child and two 17-year-old youths, Syniehubov said. At least six of the injured were hospitalized and over 60 people were evacuated.
At least four cars caught fire as a result of the attack and another 20 were damaged.
Kharkiv, located 40 km from the border with Russia, has been attacked almost daily since the beginning of the war.
Ukraine can produce several million drones a year, says the Defense Minister
Ukraine is capable of producing several million drones per year, said Ukrainian Defense Minister Rustem Umierov.
“Even this year, we explained to the market that we will purchase more than one million drones. I didn’t say how many we can produce. But we can produce several million drones, part of which is paid for from the state budget, and another part using funds from our partners. So our capacity is several million drones. And this is what we can do. We will not allow the enemy to overtake us next year. This year we will produce several times more”, declared the Minister of Defense.
Umierov also announced an expansion of Ukraine’s missile program.
“We are working hard to make sure our missile program lives up to our drone program,” he said.
Umierov’s comments come as Russian President Vladimir Putin announced that Moscow plans to increase drone production “almost tenfold” this year.
In 2023, the Russian army received about 140,000 drones of various types. This year, Moscow wants to produce 1.4 million, Putin said.
Russia refuses to participate in the second peace summit
Maria Zakharova, spokeswoman for the Russian Foreign Ministry, said that Russia will not participate in the second Peace Summit.
Zakharova qualified the preparation of the second Peace Summit as “another manifestation of the fraud of the Anglo-Saxons and their Ukrainian puppets”, who want “to impose the Zelensky formula, absolutely unviable, as the only basis for resolving the conflict, to obtain the support the global majority and deliver an ultimatum to demand Russia’s capitulation on its behalf”.
“We will not participate in such summits,” the official said.
She also said that Russia would be ready for a “political and diplomatic solution” to the Kremlin’s war of aggression against Ukraine, saying that Moscow is ready to “discuss really serious proposals that take into account the situation on the ground “.
