UN extends sanctions on Sudan for another year

The resolution submitted by the US was unanimously adopted in the 15-member UNSC.

The decision extended the period of sanctions, which include an arms embargo on the country, a travel ban on certain individuals and institutions, and an asset freeze, until September 12, 2025.

Following the vote, US Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN Ambassador Robert Wood, referring to the danger and despair that the people of Darfur continue to face, said, “This vote sends a very important message. It shows that the international community cares about the fate of these people and about peace and security in Sudan and the region.”

The UNSC adopted resolution 1591 on March 29, 2005, imposing an arms embargo and sanctions on certain individuals and institutions involved in the conflict in Darfur.
