Unemployment in the eurozone is 6.4 percent

BRUSSELS – The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate in the Eurozone was 6.4 percent in July of this year, which is less than 6.6 percent in July 2023. According to Eurostat’s estimate, 13.1 million people in the European Union, of which 10.9 million in the eurozone, were unemployed.

Compared to June 2024, unemployment fell by 82,000 in the EU and by 114,000 in the eurozone. When compared to the same period last year, unemployment is down by 72,000 in the European Union and by 190,000 in the Eurozone.

In July 2024, 2.8 million young people in the EU (under the age of 25) were unemployed, of which 2.2 million were in the Eurozone. The youth unemployment rate in the EU was 14.5 percent, which is less than 14.6 percent in June, while it was 14.2 percent in the Eurozone.

Compared to June 2024, youth unemployment decreased by 25,000 in the EU and by 37,000 in the Eurozone.

In July 2024, the unemployment rate for women was 6.1 percent in the EU, compared to 6.2 percent in June, and the unemployment rate for men was 5.8 percent. In the Eurozone, the unemployment rate for women was 6.6 percent, which is less than 6.7 percent in the previous month, and the unemployment rate for men was 6.2 percent.

The lowest unemployment rate in July was recorded by the Czech Republic (2.7 percent) and Poland (2.9 percent), followed by Germany, the Netherlands, Malta and Slovenia.

Spain (11.5 percent) and Greece (9.9 percent) had the highest percentage of unemployment in the same period, followed by Finland, Sweden and Lithuania.

In the second quarter of 2024, the number of employed persons in Serbia was 2.8 million, and the number of unemployed was 257,800. The employment rate for the given period was 51.4 percent, while the unemployment rate was 8.2 percent.

Compared to the same period of the previous year, the number of employed persons increased by 48,400, while the number of unemployed persons decreased by 44,800, and the number of people outside the labor force decreased by 30,300 persons.

According to the data of the Republic Institute of Statistics (RZS), the employment rate (51.4 percent) increased by 1.1 percentage points (pp), while the unemployment rate decreased by 1.4 pp and amounted to 8.2 percent. The rate of the population outside the labor force was 44 percent, which represents a decrease of 0.4 pp

Compared to the first quarter of 2024, the number of employed persons increased (by 28,000) and the number of people outside the labor force (by 8,700), while the number of unemployed persons decreased by 41,300. Thus, the employment rate and the rate of the population outside the labor force increased by 0.5 and 0.2 pp, respectively, while the unemployment rate decreased by 1.2 pp Biznis.rs
