UNIFIL warns. “Catastrophic impact for all”

The spokesman for the United Nations Interim Peacekeeping Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL), whose soldiers were wounded by Israeli fire, said on Saturday that he feared a “regional conflict with catastrophic impact for all” “very soon”. AFP reports.

“There is no military solution”, appreciated Andrea Tenenti, pleading for “discussions at the political and diplomatic level” to “avoid catastrophe”. “The conflict between Hezbollah and Israel is not just a conflict between two countries. Very soon, this could be a regional conflict with a catastrophic impact for all”, he continued.

Another soldier from the ranks of the Blue Helmets was wounded in southern Lebanon, UNIFIL announced on Saturday.

On Friday evening, “a soldier was hit by gunfire while a military action was taking place not far from the UNIFIL headquarters in Ras al-Naqoura,” according to a statement from the force which has 10,000 soldiers in southern Lebanon. On Thursday and Friday, UNIFIL announced that four of its members, Indonesian and Sri Lankan, were wounded, two of them by an attack by Israeli troops.

UNIFIL refused to withdraw five kilometers to the north, into Lebanese territory, as requested by the Israeli army, which has since targeted the UN force several times, causing an international outcry, the spokesman said.
