Unity 6 is now available

It’s been almost 20 years since the Unity game engine became available to developers and started to democratize game development, and a decade since the Unity 5 engine was released in 2015. After that, the manufacturer switched to annual updates (Unity 2017, Unity 2018), this streak is now broken by Unity 6, which, according to the preliminary announcement, has been available to developers since October 17. The new edition of the engine is considered by many to be another step by the company with a reputation battered by the controversial Runtime Fee to regain the trust of the community.

Although Unity showed regret and danced back to the development community after the outrage surrounding the runtime model, it will be difficult to restore the trust that has been eroding in recent years. After that, changes took place within the company as well, more than 1,800 people were laid off after CEO John Riccitiello left the company.

The new CEO, Matthew Bromberg, officially announced in September that he would drop the Runtime Fee concept, which was based on payment after installations and would have placed a disproportionate burden on smaller developers. The game engine can thus be accessed again in a subscription model, this return to basics is also indicated by the branding of Unity 6.

According to Unity VP of Product Ryan Ellis, Unity 6 focuses on stability and performance, while graphics capabilities have improved. The engine offers many new features, including customizable graphics, accelerated multiplayer development, and tools for creating games optimized for web browsers, including the new WebGPU backend. The GPU Resident Drawer allows work that used to run on the CPU to be offloaded to the GPU, providing an immediate performance boost. It also got AI-based tools like Sentis, which allows various AI models to be used in games on any device.

We already know that Unity 6.1, which builds on the core capabilities of Unity 6, will arrive in April 2025 and will support foldable and larger displays and delayed rendering in the GPU Resident Drawer.
