Unusual symptom of diabetes that occurs during meals

Diabetes occurs when blood sugar, the body’s main source of energy, is well above normal limits and sometimes the symptoms are unusual.

There are two types of diabetes: Type 1 diabetes means your body doesn’t make enough insulin. Doctors usually diagnose this condition in children and young adults.

Type 2 diabetes is the most common type and means that your body does not use insulin correctly. The chances of getting the disease increase if you are overweight or obese or if other people in your family have diabetes. Experts say both types of diabetes have some of the same warning signs.

“Red signal” transmitted by the body

Although the first symptoms of diabetes are believed to be thirst and frequent urination, there is another “red” signal that can indicate that there is an imbalance in your endocrine system.

In this sense, the diabetologist Zuhra Pavlova points out that it is possible to feel abdominal discomfort while eating. This is a likely sign of gastroparesis, one of the complications of diabetes caused by spikes in blood sugar levels.

It is a gastric motility disorder in which the evacuation of solid food is delayed and the food is not properly digested and causes unpleasant symptoms. A typical manifestation of this disorder is the feeling of satiety after the first spoonfuls eaten.

Abdominal discomfort while eating

“You feel that there is air in your stomach or you simply feel very uncomfortable while eating: you have the feeling that your stomach is full, you have belching, bloating, pain in the upper abdomen, nausea and even vomiting,” says the doctor.

In approximately 50% of patients with diabetes, gastroparesis begins acutely, in 33%, exacerbations occur periodically, and in 10%, the disease is cyclical.

Gastroparesis, a bowel motility disorder, can be treated with diet. The doctor advises you to eat less and more often, avoid fatty foods and cheese (they only irritate the stomach) and chew your food well.

“It’s important to add more fiber, fruits and vegetables to your diet. In no case should you drink juices, which cause bloating. It is also recommended to significantly reduce alcohol consumption and quit smoking,” says the specialist.

Other symptoms of diabetes

  • The feeling of constant fatigue;
  • Weight loss and loss of muscle mass;
  • Itching in the intimate area, frequent infections;
  • Vision impairment.

“If you notice such symptoms, you must consult a doctor. Doctors recommend checking blood sugar levels once a year, even for perfectly healthy people,” he says the specialist.
