PSD candidate for the presidential elections, Marcel Ciolacu, said on Monday, November 25, that he will resign from the position of PSD president after the parliamentary elections on Sunday, December 1. The social democratic leader was rated as a “safe bet” for the 2nd round by all opinion polls, but on election day he came in 3rd place, after the independent Călin Georgescu and Elena Lasconi.

UPDATE 15.31 Marcel Ciolacu announced that he is postponing his resignation from the head of the PSD after the parliamentary elections.

Initial news

If initially a quick resignation was circulated after the shameful defeat in the presidential elections, it seems that Marcel Ciolacu will remain at the head of the PSD for a whole week, until the parliamentary elections, according to political sources.

Marcel Ciolacu came first in 16 counties, 3 more than Călin Georgescu and 11 more than Elena Lasconi, but this did not ensure his presence in the final on December 8, in a historic defeat for PSD.

In the diaspora, Călin Georgescu had a score almost 15 times higher than the social democratic candidate.

It would be the first time, from 1989 until today, when PSD, in whatever form or name it may have had, has no candidate in the second presidential round.

Ciolacu declared on Friday, November 24, that if he does not enter the second round of the presidential elections, he will resign from the position of PSD president. Asked if Romania is ready to have a female president, the PSD leader replied that the Romanians decide, stressing that he believes in equal opportunities.

Asked, on Friday evening, on Antena 1, if he will resign as head of the PSD if he does not enter the second round of the presidential elections, Marcel Ciolacu replied: “Definitely, yes!” Categorical!”.
