We haven’t been able to use the feature ourselves yet. But a comprehensive rollout of the function, which may still be in the testing phase, is conceivable. After all, TikTok wants to do a lot to increase users’ watch time. When scrolling in the For You feed, the thumbnail may be given less weight; but in other areas, especially search, a well-chosen preview image can encourage people to watch.
The importance of thumbnails can also be seen from the fact that TikTok’s competitor YouTube recently introduced an A/B/C test for thumbnails.
