The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has not yet received an invitation to attend the inauguration of US President Donald Trump on January 20 in Washington, a spokeswoman for the European Commission said on Friday.
“If he gets an invitation, we’ll see then, but right now we have no plans” to attend Trump’s inauguration, spokeswoman Paula Pinho said.
Although traditionally foreign leaders are not invited to the inauguration ceremony of American presidents, this time Donald Trump dissociated himself from this custom and extended such invitations.
Chinese President Xi Jinping, former Brazilian President Jair Bolsonaro, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni are among the guests. According to the media, the Chinese president will not attend, but will send a high-ranking official to Trump’s inauguration.
