Her fate was uncertain until the last, but in the end she succeeded. Today, in a secret vote, the European Parliament confirmed Ursula von der Leyen for a new five-year term at the head of the European Commission.
Support by the Leyen the Socialists (S&D), Liberals (Renew) and the Greens also announced just before the vote, along with the European People’s Party (EPP), from which he comes. The appointment of a German politician from the ranks (EPP) was thus supported by 401 MPs. 707 deputies voted, 284 were against, 15 abstained, and seven ballots were invalid.
In the meantime, it was clear in the other two far-right groups, Patriots for Europe and Europe of Sovereign Nations, as well as in the Left, that they would not support it. The far-right group of European Conservatives and Reformists (ECR) announced before the vote that the vast majority of national delegations would not support it.
The European Commission will thus be able to start forming its future commissioner team, which is expected to be presented in September.
In an address to the MEPs today, she stood up for the establishment “the true defense of the European Union”. Among other things, she was critical of the Hungarian Prime Minister’s peace mission Viktor Orban in Moscow, which she described as a mission of appeasement.
She highlighted strengthening the competitiveness of the European economy as her first priority and announced the preparation of an agreement for a clean industry in the first hundred days of her new mandate. She announced that her new team will include, among others, commissioners responsible for reducing the administrative burden on companies, for defense and for housing.
