The computer outage of July 19, 2024 had a huge impact on air traffic in the United States.

TRANSPORTATION – American travelers had to be very patient. This Friday, July 19, the skies of the United States were completely emptied after the global computer outage caused by a bug in the American cybersecurity group CrowdStrike, and which affected computers running Windows.

As you can see in the 12 hour timelapse below created by an Internet user, the fleet of three American companies, Delta, United and American Airlines slowed down and then was completely immobilized throughout the United States. A very rare situation. The three companies have since resumed their activities.

At the time of the outage, the flight and passenger information screens at airports displayed the famous “blue screen of death”. Many videos and photos were circulating on social media, showing travelers stuck in airports and endless queues.

Problems at airports around the world

France was also affected: While the Paris airport manager ADP assured that the outage spared its computer systems, the group acknowledged disruptions at Roissy and Orly, which are the two main entry points for foreign delegations at the Olympics. Transavia France, a low-cost airline of the Air France-KLM group, was forced to cancel nearly 40 flights.

The same situation is happening in Mexico, where some airlines’ planes are still not taking off. “We have been waiting since 3am”says Juan Pablo Olvera, stuck at Mexico City airport. “As the system is down, the QR codes were not working”he noted, as long queues and flight delays were reported.

Indian airlines have even ended up manually issuing tickets for some passengers.
