Today’s US election will determine not only who will be the new occupant of the White House, but also which party will control Congress. It is estimated that the Democrats will secure a majority in the House of Representatives, while the Republicans will win the Senate.
The outcome of the elections for these two houses will also depend on whether the new US president will have difficulty enacting the changes he wants until the 2026 midterm elections.
The battle for Congress
Analysts estimate that the Republicans they have a good chance of regaining control of it Senate where Democrats hold a slim 51-49 majority.
Today’s election is about luck 34 seats in the Senate (in total 100) and of 435 seats in the House of Representativeswhere Democrats are expected to win a majority, as they need just four more seats to control that body.
Senate control
Like the outcome of the presidential election, that of the congressional election is to be decided by some votes. The battle for the Senate will be decided by seven duelswhile less than 40 seats in the Parliament are estimated to be truly ambivalent.
Voters do not appear to have a clear preference for either party. A poll conducted in October by Reuters/Ipsos showed that 43% of registered voters would support a Republican candidate and the same percentage would support a Democrat.
Republicans must win only two additional seats to gain control of the Senate and are expected to win easily at West Virginiawhere Democratic senator-turned-independent Joe Manchin is retiring.
The state’s popular governor, Republican Jim Justice, is projected to win easily.
Republicans can win a majority in the Senate with a victory in Montana or Ohiotwo states in which the Democratic candidates are fighting head-to-head with the Republicans.
In addition, Republicans may expand their majority in the Senate even more if they win in other Midwestern states. In this way they will be able to block many of Kamala Harris’ initiativesif she emerges victorious in the presidential elections or to help Donald Trump proceed with his tax reforms, if that new US president is elected.
Blurry landscape of the House of Representatives
The picture is less clear in the House of Representatives, where Republicans hold a slim 220-212 majority. Analysts estimate that the Democrats could easily win several seats to check the body.
With each party certain to win at least 200 seats, the majority the winner will have will be small.
Electoral battles in the Democratic states of New York and California may decide which party gains control of the House.
