US Secret Service chief resigns after failing to protect Trump

He decided to step down a day after refusing to resign.

Kimberly Cheatle, the director of the U.S. Secret Service, resigned on the 23rd (local time) after taking responsibility for the failure to protect former President Donald Trump, who was injured in a shooting during an outdoor campaign rally.

In an email to his staff that day, Director Cheatle said regarding the shooting of former President Trump, “As Director, I take full responsibility for the security failures,” and “It is with a heavy heart that I have made the difficult decision to step down as Director in light of recent events.”

President Joe Biden issued a statement saying he would appoint a new Secret Service director.

Earlier, former President Trump was injured on the 13th when a gunman shot him in the right ear during an outdoor campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania. The incident left one spectator dead and three others, including former President Trump, injured, sparking controversy over security failures. The Secret Service, which is responsible for protecting former President Trump, was strongly criticized for failing to block the gunman even though it confirmed that he was on the roof of a building near the rally. The Republican Party demanded Director Cheatle’s resignation, citing the serious security failure, and some Democratic lawmakers joined in.

At a House hearing the previous day, Director Cheatle refused to resign, saying, “I am the best person to lead the Secret Service.” However, he eventually resigned from his position a day later, taking responsibility for the security failures.
