The US government on Friday announced new sanctions against Iran in response to the October 1 attack on Israel by the Iranian military. The sanctions are said to be aimed especially at oil companies, reports the German news agency dpa. The EU could adopt similar measures next week.

US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said the measures were aimed at “cutting off the flow of revenue that the Iranian regime uses to finance its nuclear program and missile development, support terrorist organizations and perpetuate conflicts in the Middle East”.

He also said that the sanctions are aimed at several Iranian business entities involved in the trade in oil and related products, according to dpa. The US Treasury is also warning against possible new measures against Iranian oil traders.

Sanctions as a result of the attack

“As long as Iran continues to use its energy revenues to fund attacks on our allies, support terrorism around the world and other destabilizing activities, we will continue to use every tool at our disposal to hold it accountable,” Blinken added.

According to him, the American sanctions are the result of the attack on Israel, which Iran carried out with about 200 missiles in early October. The Iranian attack was said to be a response to the Israeli killings of the leaders of the Palestinian Islamist movement Hamas and the Lebanese armed movement Hezbollah.

Iran Air is also a target

The European Union could follow the US sanctions against Iran with similar measures next week. According to dpa’s diplomatic sources, the foreign ministers of the EU member states will discuss this when they meet in Luxembourg on Monday.

Among other things, EU sanctions could be directed against organizations and individuals involved in Iran’s ballistic missile and drone production programs. Iran’s state airline Iran Air is also a potential target, according to dpa.
