Vaisala to partner with BMW | Bond

Measurement product company Vaisala the car manufacturer says it will deliver BMW:s real-time air quality data for new cars.

According to the company, the Vaisala Xweather air quality data will help BMW drivers avoid health problems caused by air pollution. Drivers can plan their routes by avoiding areas with high levels of air pollution, or by adjusting their car’s ventilation in these areas.

Air quality data will first be available for the new BMW X1, X2 and 2 Series Active Tourer cars, as well as the Mini and Mini Countryman models. According to Vaisala, over time the data will become available for other models as well.

In its announcement, Vaisala refers to the disadvantages of air pollution both in terms of people’s health and the condition of the car.

“Especially for people living in cities and industrial areas, local pollution can cause serious harm in the long term. The daily commute should not be a health risk,” head of Vaisala Xweather’s automotive business Petri Marjava says.

In addition, air pollution can affect vehicle performance by clogging air filters and reducing engine performance, power and tire grip.
