MotoGP organizers still want the season finale to take place in Valencia, but the date of the race could be moved, according to a well-informed source.
Most of the Sepang paddock at this weekend’s Malaysian Grand Prix are waiting to see how the rescue efforts in Valencia will develop after devastating floods left at least 158 dead by Friday morning, with scores of people still missing.
Dorna’s executive management is working on different scenarios for the 20th and final round on the calendar. The race was originally scheduled for Sunday, November 17 at the Riccardo Tormo circuit, a venue located in an area badly affected by the storm.
So far, the only statement that can be considered official was made on Thursday by AS Karmelo Espeleta, general manager of Dorna.
“In principle, the original date (of the event) will be kept. They are working to fix access and services. The track is not damaged”he said.
FIM President Jorge Viejas spoke briefly on the issue on Thursday, telling Sky Italia: “If we don’t race in Valencia, it will be worse for the autonomous province there and its economy.”
