Van Aert wins seventh Vuelta stage

Belgian cycling star Wout van Aert has won the seventh stage of the Vuelta in Spain.

The 29-year-old from the Visma-Lease a bike team won the sprint of the group of favorites on Friday after 180.5 km, relegating Mathias Vacek (Lidl-Trek) and Pau Miquel (Kern Pharma) to second and third places. With his second daily victory, van Aert consolidated his lead in the points classification.

There was no change at the top of the overall rankings. The red jersey is worn by Australian Ben O’Connor (Decathlon AG2R). Primoz Rolgic (+ 4:45) from the top German team Red Bull-Bora-hansgrohe is second, having reduced his deficit by six seconds thanks to a time bonus.

The eighth stage on Saturday runs 159 km from Ubeda to Cazorla and ends with a final climb of almost five km. The Tour of Spain ends on September 8 in Madrid.
